Common Facelift Myths (And the Truth)

The concept of facelifts is one that’s been distorted by media and pop culture, giving a commonly successful procedure a bad rap. When many people hear the word “facelift”, they think of celebrities whose badly done surgical work has been heavily scrutinized. However, there are far more facelifts done that you don’t hear about. Why? Because no one is going to publicize, or even notice, when the procedure goes well, and that’s the beauty of a good facelift.

The procedure still remains a popular skin rejuvenation go-to for those wanting to turn back the hands of time, and for good reason. The surgery last hours, the recovery last weeks, and the results last years. While no surgical procedure is without risk and no guarantees can be made, surgeons are learning more and more advancements to improve the results of facelifts. The key to ensuring you end up with a quality result is to pick your surgeon wisely. At Zannis Center for Plastic Surgery, our experience, education, and consistent action to be at the top of our field keeps us a leading choice for facial procedures. We’ve heard every question, as well as every myth, so we thought we’d dispel a few common myths that keeps people from seeking out their options for skin rejuvenation.

  1. Facelifts by nature will give you that tight, pulled-back look. With a reputable and highly skilled surgeon, this doesn’t need to be a cause for concern. Many people picture the pulled-back, catlike facelift disasters that were heavily publicized about or even trendy in the 90s. However, significant advancements have been made in the capabilities of surgeons, and a quality, legitimate surgeon knows how to avoid this unpleasant result. The feline look isn’t the rule, but rather the off-putting exception.
  2. If you get a facelift, you’ll never look like yourself again. This is a common concern, and rightfully so. Again however, with a trained surgeon, this isn’t an issue. The point of a facelift is actually to keep you looking like yourself, only more youthful and refreshed. It’s not to make you look like someone else and shouldn’t be used as such. Though a facelift can’t reverse aging, it can eliminate signs of it, such as wrinkling and sagging of skin.
  3. Everyone will be able to tell that you’ve had work done. The key objective with a good facelift is just the opposite. The goal of the procedure is to accomplish a natural look. Once a quality facelift has healed, you should expect to look freshened up, like you’ve spent the last few years vacationing and getting lots of sleep. Your eyes will look lifted and brighter. Deep skin creases will be significantly diminished. Your neck will look slimmed and contoured. Your jowls will be far less noticeable.
  4. You can get the same results from non-invasive treatments, so why go that far? Non-invasive treatments like Botox are fitting in certain circumstances, but will never provide the same capabilities or results as a facelift. These treatments can be used leading up to or after a facelift to help put off the need or keep your face looking refreshed, but they cannot significantly address issues like the look of jowls or a sagging neck.
