The 3 Major Types of Tattoo Removal

Many people consider having a tattoo removed at some point in their life. If you’re one of these people, you may be wondering exactly how to remove a tattoo. You may be surprised to learn that there are actually 3 common methods professionals use to remove unwanted tattoos and they’re all very different from each other.

Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal is equal parts technology and biology. In this type of procedure, a focused laser light breaks down the ink particles and tattoo pigments. Once that’s been completed your body’s immune system will work to naturally process, break down, and remove the ink from your skin.

While this type of procedure is non-invasive, you will most likely need multiple sessions in order to completely remove all the ink. Most patients require an average of 5-6 visits spread out over the course of several months in order to see complete results, but the length and frequency of treatment sessions can change based on a variety of factors like age, skin type, skin tone, and how well your body responds to the treatment.

Dermabrasion Tattoo Removal

Better left for smaller, simpler tattoos that don’t have lots of colors or shading, dermabrasion uses a high-speed brush or wheel to remove layers of the skin until the ink-stained layers can be reached and removed. These type of treatments can cause some rawness and slight scarring in some cases, so we don’t recommend dermabrasion for larger tattoos or on areas of the body that are highly visible.

Full Excision Tattoo Removal

This is by far the most effective, but also the most invasive, tattoo removal method. Undoubtedly the quickest method, this process involves the use of a precision scalpel in order to achieve 100% complete removal of ink. Since this procedure does usually produce a bit of scarring, tattoo excision isn’t feasible for large tattoos.
