A rhytidectomy, popularly known as a facelift, is a cosmetic procedure that can help you achieve a youthful facial appearance. It can rejuvenate your face and make you appear more alert. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the facelift is the 6th most popular cosmetic surgery.

Depending on your individual needs, a facelift can range from minimally invasive to extensive. The procedure involves removing excess skin and tightening the tissues of the muscles. Thousands of Americans undergo the facelift surgery every year and a good percentage of them are more than satisfied with the results.

Is Facelift for You

Aging is inevitable in life and no one can stop it from happening. However, you can eliminate the visible signs of aging and obtain a youthful appearance. Maintaining a youthful appearance can, to a great extent, boost your self-esteem and self-confidence. In addition to improving how you feel about yourself, it can also improve the way others view you.

A facelift can help you control the effects that time, exposure to the sun and other elements, and gravity has on the appearance of your face. It can improve the look of your face by eliminating excess skin and decreasing the amount of facial skin sagging you see.

The procedure is a great solution if you have a double chin that you want to get rid of, your neck skin is creased and sagging, you have nasolabial folds, prominent creases from your nose to your mouth’s corner, and marionette lines, lines from the mouth’s corner to the chin.

It is imperative that your general health is good before undergoing this surgery. It is also important that you have a positive attitude and your expectations are realistic.

The Facelift Procedure

Before you undergo the procedure, your surgeon will want to know your cosmetic goals. You will be able to discuss your goals and anything else on your mind during your initial consultation. You can ask all the questions you want at this time. Your surgeon will also ask for your detailed medical history as well. You may be required to get a medical clearance certificate from a physician.

Once your surgeon confirms that you are an ideal candidate for the facelift surgery, he will give you preoperative instructions to prepare. Giving up smoking 5 or 6 weeks prior to the surgery, avoiding certain medications such as aspirin, Motrin, and Advil, and staying hydrated will help to minimize complications and improve the recovery process.

To begin, your surgeon will utilize a type of sedation method based on your needs. Once the incision is made, he may remove excess fat and skin, tighten the muscles, and/or correct any structural issues.

Depending on your goals, you may need a traditional facelift or a mini. A mini-facelift is a less invasive procedure and will require a small incision. It is ideal for those people who experience less sagging in the skin and requires only minor lifts. A standard facelift is more extensive and will take more time, but the results are significant if you need it.

Once the corrections are made, the skin will be pulled back and the incision will be closed. Post-surgical marks for facelifts are hidden by your surgeon and are virtually invisible. The incisions made are usually flat, narrow, and placed behind the ear.

After the Procedure

After the surgery, you may have to wear a compression garment. Directions will be given on how to wear it and how to take it off properly. You will experience some pain and discomfort after the surgery, however, they will decrease within 48 hours. You will be given pain medication and antibiotics to take with instructions on the appropriate doses you should take and the times you should take it.

You may experience bruising and swelling after the surgery, but it will go away eventually. You should also remember to have someone available to take you home after the procedure is complete. Have them stay with you for a few days to help you take care of things around the house as well. It is recommended that you refrain from driving for at least a week after the surgery.

The recovery time for the standard facelift will be more than that of the mini-facelift. Your doctor will let you know when you can return to your normal daily routines.
