About Chin Implants
Jawline definition affects your entire face and is one the most important elements of your facial profile. Pre-jowl volume loss and the deterioration of facial muscles are some of the most common reasons patients choose chin implants, (2) though other people choose them to address an underdeveloped chin. Chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty, is a helpful procedure for achieving a more defined facial profile.
Microgenia
Microgenia is a condition characterized by an underdeveloped or weak chin, also known as mandibular hypoplasia. It can affect both men and women, and it can be present from birth or develop over time due to aging or certain medical conditions. Microgenia can have a significant impact on an individual’s facial appearance and self-confidence. If you have a small chin, you can achieve your desired look with an implant that will enhance the shape of your face for a well-balanced look.
What Are Facial Implants Made Of?
Facial implants are typically biocompatible substances like silicone that have been deemed safe for use in the human body. Biocompatibility refers to the ability of a material to coexist with living tissue without causing adverse reactions or complications.
Chin Implants Benefits
After a chin implant procedure, you will experience a noticeable change in the appearance of your facial contour. You can enjoy a defined, contoured jawline. The benefits of chin implants include the following:
- Enhanced facial contours
- Increased symmetry
- Long-lasting results
- Improved self-esteem
- Increased confidence
Candidates for Chin Implants
If you have an uneven facial profile or would like to improve chin definition, you are likely a good candidate for chin augmentation. The best candidates are physically healthy nonsmokers who do not have any conditions that affect jaw function. During your consultation, Dr. Zannis will discuss the best shape, size, and material for your chin implants to help you meet your goals.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation, we will discuss your medical history, current medications, and the results you would like to achieve with chin implants. We will discuss your surgical goals and the facial contour you desire. During your consultation, we will also ask if you previously had any cosmetic facial surgeries and whether or not you would like to combine a chin implant procedure with additional treatments such as chin liposuction, rhinoplasty, facelift, or neck lift. We offer several corresponding treatments to help you contour your face for your desired results.
Preparation
To prepare for your chin augmentation procedure, we will ask you to stop taking blood thinning medications and anti-inflammatory medications 1-2 weeks before your procedure, if applicable. If you smoke, you will need to stop for approximately 6 weeks before your procedure. To prepare, we also recommend planning your meals and going to the grocery store so you can recover comfortably at home. You will need to arrange for a trustworthy adult to drive you home after your procedure and monitor your progress over the first few days to ensure that you have a smooth recovery.
Facial Implant Procedure
After we meet with you to talk about your goals and your options, we will custom-order your implant based on your facial measurements and the results you would like to achieve. Then, we will carefully place your facial implants in the chin through discreet incisions inside the mouth at the lower gum line. Generally, our chin implant surgeries are performed as an outpatient procedure under IV sedation.
Recovery
Since we perform facial implant surgery as an outpatient procedure, you should be able to return to work within a few short days. We generally recommend refraining from heavy lifting and vigorous activity for 2-4 weeks afterward as well. Facial implants like chin augmentations are an excellent option for many patients. If you would like to learn more about our facial implants and all of your options, we encourage you to see our blog.
Results
After your facial implant procedure, you will see results immediately. The initial swelling and mild discomfort should subside in 2-4 weeks and dissipate fully in 1-2 months, as final results appear. You can enjoy the new facial definition that comes with a chin implant and the results will be noticeable but natural.
Corresponding Procedures
Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty is a procedure that contours your nose for your desired look. If your nose does not suit your preferences or you have experienced changes to your nose from an injury, a rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty can balance your facial profile. We can perform a rhinoplasty and place a chin implant in the same appointment, depending on your goals.
Facelift
A facelift is a procedure that adjusts excess skin and fat on your face for a younger appearance. As you age, a decrease in collagen production can result in wrinkles, sagging skin, and droopy jowls. There is no need to live with the effects of aging on your face. We can quickly reverse signs of age with a facelift or neck lift for natural-looking but effective results.
How Much Does Chin Augmentation Cost in North Carolina?
The cost of your procedure will depend on the results you would like to achieve. At Zannis Plastic Surgery, we will work with you to make your procedure as accessible as possible. We also offer memberships to reduce the cost of your treatments. Our Zannis rewards app provides ways to reduce treatment costs for returning patients. Contact our office or call our North Carolina location at (252) 633-1197 to get started with your treatment.
FAQ
Are chin implants permanent?
Yes, unlike dermal fillers the results of a chin implant are permanent. The implant is a long-term device, so you can enjoy your new facial contour without the need for routine maintenance. This is the best option for patients who are looking for a one-time surgery rather than temporary fillers.
Can chin implant surgery correct facial asymmetry?
Chin implant surgery can often help improve facial symmetry by enhancing the chin’s projection and creating a more balanced appearance.
Will there be visible scarring after a chin implant procedure?
Incisions for chin implant surgery are typically discreetly placed, ensuring that any resulting scars are well-concealed within natural creases or areas of the face such as under the chin or inside the mouth.
How much size can I add with a chin implant?
A chin implant can add 4-7 cm to your chin and adjust your facial contour for your desired results. During your consultation, we will discuss your goals and desired face shape to determine the best approach.
Can a chin implant be combined with other facial procedures?
Yes, chin implant surgery can be combined with other facial procedures such as rhinoplasty (nose surgery), facelift, or neck lift for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Combining procedures helps ensure overall facial harmony and balance while addressing multiple aesthetic concerns simultaneously.
Are there any risks to a chin implant?
With any procedure, there is a small risk of infection or implant rejection near the injection site. For men with beards, there is a risk of hair loss near the incision site. During your initial appointment, we will assess your medical history to determine whether or not the procedure is a good fit for you.
Does a neck lift fix a double chin?
A neck lift can correct a double chin under certain circumstances. When excess fat contributes to a double chin, liposuction aids in removing the troublesome fatty tissue. Once fully healed, patients often notice a more defined and slimmer jawline.
