Male Body Contouring

Conveniently located to serve the areas of New Bern, NC

Male Body Lipousction, Dr. Zannis, New Bern, NC

Male body contouring is specialized to meet men’s desires and the vision of the ideal male physique. Although there is a perception that cosmetic procedures are geared toward women, the culture is quickly changing. With the recent advancements in various types of minimally-invasive liposuction, men, too, can increase their body confidence with little downtime and discreet incisions that are only a fraction of an inch.

Liposuction in men is different than in women. The areas where stubborn fat tends to accumulate in men are usually the neck, chest, abdomen, and flanks (love handles). Also, men and women have different types of fat. The fat in men is typically more fibrous and difficult to remove. Our SafeLipo technique uses special instruments (a more aggressive basket tipped cannula and a power-assisted handle) to allow for easier removal of fibrous fat. Fortunately, men usually have thicker skin and this allows for a nice contour after the fat is removed.

How Liposuction Works

Since its inception in the 1970s, liposuction has come a long way in terms of safety and effectiveness. No matter your chosen method, what matters most is the surgeon’s skill in defining a look that meets the patient’s desired outcome. Many men choose to focus on the following areas:

  • Abdomen (Belly)
  • Love Handles
  • Chest Area
  • Cheeks, Chin, and Neck
  • Upper Arms
  • Back
  • Calves and Ankles

A standard liposuction procedure begins with administering local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s treatment plan and how much fat is extracted from the body. Next, Dr. Zannis injects tumescent local anesthesia, a solution of epinephrine, lidocaine, and saline. With the injection of this fluid into the treatment area, the fat swells and separates from other tissues, and blood vessels constrict- limiting blood loss during the procedure. Next, he uses a specialized cannula, a thin tube that is connected to a suction device in order to remove fat cells. Depending on which area is being sculpted, he will choose a unique cannula tip that extracts fat in a specific manner. Once an adequate amount of fat is collected, Dr. Zannis will close the incisions with gauze and/or surgical tape- they are so small that sutures are not needed. While this includes the most basic steps of the procedure, keep in mind that since 2011, researchers have created over 50 new liposuction devices and methods, giving surgeons a deeper understanding of how to properly and permanently remove fat. Benefits of Body Contouring

A 2020 study from the American Society of Plastic Surgery found that liposuction remains in the top 5 most-performed cosmetic treatments, and there are many valid reasons for this statistic. While many men are focused on the outcome, there are other benefits to consider in order to fully grasp why liposuction is one of the most requested procedures in the United States. At Zannis Plastic Surgery, we offer tumescent liposuction, laser-assisted SmartLipo, and fat-equalizing SAFELipo– all with unique qualities:

  • Tumescent liposuction is the standard liposuction procedure that has been perfected over the course of more than 30 years.
  • SmartLipo significantly reduces patient downtime. (2)
  • SAFELipo significantly reduces the risk of uneven fat distribution post-procedure.
  • All three methods Dr. Zannis performs can be completed under local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia.
  • Liposuction incisions for body contouring are typically an eighth of an inch to one-quarter of an inch.
  • The use of compression garments after the procedure prevents the development of blood clots, excessive swelling, and seroma- a condition where serous fluid collects in one area under the skin.
  • The risk of infection is incredibly low at only 0.1%. (3)
  • If you maintain your weight, results are permanent.

Candidates for Liposuction

If you have trouble trimming down your fat deposits with diet and exercise, liposuction may be the solution you are looking for. Ideal candidates for this procedure are in good health and have good overall skin elasticity that can properly retract after fat removal. They are also non-smokers, however, Dr. Zannis will consider patients who are willing to stop for a few weeks in order to better optimize their healing. Candidates shouldn’t have any underlying conditions that could slow down their recovery or cause complications- Dr. Zannis will carefully evaluate each individual to identify any possible issues. Finally, prospective patients should have positive, realistic expectations for the procedure and understand that it is not a weight-loss solution, only a procedure to sculpt specific areas of the body.

Personal Consultation

After your personal consultation with Dr. Zannis, you will have a solid understanding of your liposuction options and what the procedure entails. If you have any questions or concerns about your chosen method or the treatment area of your choice, Dr. Zannis will clarify every necessary detail to ensure that you make an informed decision. During this meeting, you will also have the chance to evaluate other procedure options besides liposuction that may be more suited for your body. If you feel ready to take the next step, we invite you to call our practice at (252) 633-1197 or book your appointment with our consultation page today.

Preparation

If Dr. Zannis finds that you are a suitable candidate for a liposuction procedure, he will first start out by ordering blood tests that will determine your health status and if there are any areas of concern. If all tests come back normal, he will then review your medications and/or any supplements and require that you avoid anti-inflammatory and blood-thinning substances. These types of medications can place you at risk for unwanted bleeding and bruising. If you are a smoker, Dr. Zannis will ask you to stop consuming any form of nicotine about 4 to 6 weeks before your scheduled surgery. Finally, since it’s an outpatient procedure, we recommend that you make plans for someone to take you home since you won’t be capable of driving.

Procedure Options

Tumescent Liposuction

This standard form of liposuction is the most common method used by surgeons since it is the simplest. Tumescent local anesthesia injected into the treatment area consists of 3 or 4 ingredients: lidocaine for fully numbing the area, epinephrine that limits blood loss, and saline that expands the fat tissue. Some formulations contain sodium bicarbonate that provides even more numbing. Dr. Zannis uses a super wet technique that involves injecting 1 ml of tumescent fluid for every ml of fat that is collected. With this tumescent technique, only 1% of the aspirated material is blood. SmartLipo

SmartLipo is an FDA-cleared liposuction procedure that utilizes a gentle yet precise laser to break apart and liquefy fat prior to suction. Dr. Zannis can choose one of three laser wavelengths, 1064 nm, 1320 nm, and 1440 nm for further customization. Smartlipo has been shown to provide mild skin-tightening effects

SAFELipo

SAFE stands for separation, aspiration, and fat equalization, and it refers to a specific liposuction technique, not a device. With this method, Dr. Zannis follows this three-step process by first using a power-assisted cannula that vibrates the fat in order to break it up. Next, he switches to a smaller cannula to perform the suction portion of the procedure. Finally, he will take the time to mold and sculpt the fat just under the skin to better promote smoother contours.

Gynecomastia Liposuction

Gynecomastia is a condition that results in excess breast tissue growth in men. Though genetics, hormones, and lifestyle factors can contribute to its development, only surgery can correct it. Sometimes, only liposuction is needed to contour the chest, while other times, a more comprehensive form of gynecomastia surgery that requires excision is necessary.

Recovery and Results

It’s normal to expect tenderness, bruising, and swelling after any form of liposuction, but Dr. Zannis will be sure to prescribe you the right medications to handle this discomfort. Some patients find that over-the-counter remedies are just as helpful. Depending on surgical factors, you will have to wear a compression garment over the treatment area for a total of 2 to 6 weeks. This will help your skin retract, minimize swelling, and prevent the likelihood of serious medical issues like blood clots. You will be able to return to work within 1 to 2 weeks, so long as you avoid strenuous activities. After roughly 6 weeks, you will be able to return to your regular workout routine.
