About Calf & Ankle Liposuction
Calf and ankle liposuction uses a suctioning cannula to eliminate fat deposits from around the lower legs to restore a narrower, more slender look across the ankles and calves. Several factors can contribute to a fuller appearance in the region, including genetics and weight fluctuations; however, toning this region through dieting and regular exercise can be quite difficult. With calf and ankle liposuction, you can target the fat concerning you most and restore a more natural look to your lower legs.
Types of Liposuction
Dr. Zannis can perform three different types of liposuction to help you recontour the appearance of your calves and ankles, including tumescent liposuction, SmartLipo®, and SAFELipo®. The exact approach he uses will vary according to your needs, but he will discuss it with you ahead of time so you understand what to expect.
Tumescent Liposuction
Tumescent liposuction is considered the gold standard for liposuction. (1) It consists of Dr. Zannis administering a tumescent solution of lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline into the targeted treatment area. This solution will numb the local region, minimize bleeding, and swell the fat cells for easier removal. (2) He will then insert a manual cannula and move it back and forth to remove the local fat and permanently resculpt the region.
SmartLipo®
SmartLipo® is an advanced variation of liposuction that uses laser technology. The laser energy melts the targeted fat while minimizing unwanted damage to the surrounding tissues, which can result in a quicker recovery overall. (3) This treatment can additionally stimulate the production of new collagen in the treatment area, leading to firmer, more elastic skin.
SAFELipo
SAFELipo® is a three-step liposuction treatment that can comprehensively contour your figure. This approach consists of separation, aspiration, and fatty equilibrium, and it uses basket-tipped cannulas that suction fat more gently than other cannula designs. (4)
Candidates
You may want to explore calf and ankle liposuction if you are frustrated by stubborn fat around your calves and ankles that contribute to the appearance of “cankles,” or excessive fullness. You may also benefit from this procedure if fat around this region has affected your ease of mobility.
To qualify for treatment, you should be in good general health and hold realistic expectations regarding your results. You should also be nonsmoking or willing to quit using nicotine altogether. Dr. Zannis will assess your candidacy during your personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
Attending a personal consultation is a fundamental part of your procedure. During this meeting, Dr. Zannis will review your medical history, discuss your concerns, and learn more about your aesthetic goals. He will also perform a physical examination to assess your skin quality and fat distribution.
Dr. Zannis will use the shared details to create a treatment plan that addresses each of your needs. He will decide which liposuction technique is best suited for you, how much fat he plans to remove, where he will place the incision, and more. He will also answer any questions you have prepared. After this point, you will be able to schedule your procedure.

Preparation
Once you have scheduled your procedure, Dr. Zannis will provide you with detailed preparation instructions, which may include:
- Avoiding Certain Medications: Avoid taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning or antiplatelet properties.
- Arranging At-Home Care: Have a trusted friend or family member stay with you for the first 24 to 48 hours of your recovery.
- Coordinating Transportation: Arrange for a ride home after your procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself.
- Preparing Time Away: You will need to take some time away from your career and personal commitments to focus on your recovery.
- Running Errands: Fill any prescriptions, acquire snacks and recovery items, and create a comfortable recovery space at home.
- Ceasing Any Consumption: Stop consuming any alcohol or nicotine in the weeks leading up to your procedure.
Procedure
Upon your arrival, a member of Dr. Zannis’s team will lead you to a private treatment room. Here, you will meet with Dr. Zannis and his operating team. They will mark the treatment area before administering anesthesia to ensure you feel comfortable.
Dr. Zannis will place a small incision near the targeted fat deposits and inject them with a tumescent solution composed of epinephrine, lidocaine, and saline. This solution will minimize bleeding, numb your tissues, and swell the fat cells for easier removal. He will then insert a cannula through the incision and move it back and forth to break down the local fat before suctioning it from the body, resculpting your ankles and calves in the process.
Recovery
After your liposuction procedure, you will need to take some time to allow your body to heal. You may experience some initial swelling and bruising around the treated areas, but these effects will subside on their own. You can also manage them with prescribed medications and plenty of rest. Dr. Zannis may also have you wear a compression garment, which will limit additional swelling and allow your tissues to maintain their new shape as they heal.
You may return to most of your routine after resting for 1 to 2 weeks. However, you will need to refrain from anything arduous or demanding until Dr. Zannis has cleared you to return. He will give you a detailed set of instructions during your consultation. If any questions arise, we ask that you contact our office so our team can provide you with the necessary information.
Results
You will be able to enjoy your refined results once you have fully recovered. Your exact results will vary, but you can expect smoother and tighter skin, more slender ankles and calves, and a seamless transition between the knees, shins, ankles, calves, and feet. These effects can contribute to a more contoured and sculpted figure overall, as well as a greater sense of self-confidence that you can carry with you in every scenario.
The results of calf and ankle liposuction are long-lasting, as your fat cells cannot return once your body has cleared them out. However, you will need to maintain a stable weight, as fluctuations can cause the surrounding cells to swell.
