Dr. Zannis offers several different liposuction techniques and technologies, each of which can treat the waist. These include tumescent liposuction, SafeLipo®, and SmartLipo®.

  • Tumescent Liposuction: Tumescent liposuction is considered the gold standard for liposuction—it is a primary component of almost all liposuction procedures today. This method utilizes a specialized solution of epinephrine, saline, and a local anesthetic to help remove the fat cells more easily.

Preparation

After you schedule your procedure, Dr. Zannis will provide detailed pre-operative instructions to help you prepare. These instructions may vary depending on the details of your surgical plan, but following them closely will help produce the best possible results.

You may need to discontinue taking blood-thinning medications or supplements. If applicable, you must cease nicotine use and alcohol consumption completely in the weeks before your procedure. You will also need to arrange transportation home after your procedure, and prepare to take time away from your responsibilities and commitments.

Procedure

When you arrive for your procedure, our team will first cleanse and sanitize your skin, then administer either local or general anesthesia, depending on the size of the treatment area and the scale of the procedure.

Regardless of the liposuction variation he performs, Dr. Zannis will place several small incisions around your waist. He will inject the fatty tissues with a tumescent solution containing lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline. This solution numbs the tissue, minimizes bleeding, and swells the fat cells for easier removal. (1) From there, he will perform one of three liposuction techniques to recontour your waist.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is the most traditional method of liposuction. After administering the tumescent solution, Dr. Zannis will insert a manual cannula into the treatment area. He will move the cannula back and forth to help break up fat. Gentle vacuum suction then pulls the fat out of the body, leaving the area more defined and toned.

SmartLipo®

When performing SmartLipo®, Dr. Zannis will use a cannula equipped with a laser fiber inside. The cannula will administer low-wavelength lasers to help liquefy your fat cells before suctioning them out of the body. The laser technology preserves the surrounding tissue while targeting fat, minimizing any potential tissue damage. This technology additionally activates the natural production of collagen, one of the essential proteins for maintaining youthful and firm skin. This can promote skin-tightening effects, leading to more defined contours.

SafeLipo®

SafeLipo® is a three-step variation of liposuction that provides a gentler experience when contouring the waist. These steps include fat separation, lipoaspiration, and fat equalization. These steps aim to produce smoother contours while minimizing trauma to the tissues surrounding your waist. (2)

  • Fat Separation: This step administers the tumescent solution into the treatment area to swell and loosen your fat cells.
  • Lipoaspiration: Dr. Zannis inserts a vibrating cannula into the treatment area to emulsify the fat. Gentle vacuum suction removes the broken-down fat from the waist.
  • Fat Equalization: Dr. Zannis smooths out the remaining fat to create even and uniform curves.

Recovery

Waist liposuction is an outpatient procedure, which means you will return home on the same day as your procedure to begin your recovery. You may experience temporary swelling or bruising around your waist, but these effects are temporary and will fade with plenty of rest. You will need to wear a compression garment for the first several days of your recovery, which can help you manage any further swelling and maintain your new curves as you recover. You will be able to return to your career and other commitments after resting for approximately one to two weeks, but you will need to continue avoiding strenuous or high-impact activities until Dr. Zannis clears you to return.
